The Chinese herb, Ginkgo biloba, is among the most widely-researched natural remedies. Clinical studies show that the leaves of this tree, taken in a natural supplement form, have a remarkable pharmacological action on the circulatory and nervous systems.
Ginkgo is particularly valued for its anti-aging properties, and has long been prescribed to treat short-term memory loss, different types of dementia, cognitive disorders, senility and Alzheimer’s disease.
Aging without Growing Old
The process of aging results in a number of neurological changes and ginkgo biloba is well known for its impact in slowing down these changes in the body.
Ginkgo and Aging: What the Science Says…
Studies carried out in Europe – where many elderly people use standardized extracts of ginkgo for mental fitness – showed that ginkgo encourages the flow of blood into the brain. Other studies show that the herb helps in a variety of complications related to the brain such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. When more blood flows to the brain, people become more alert and concentrate better. As a result, it helps people to have clearer thoughts and also become more sociable. In addition to enhancing mood, ginkgo also stops ringing ears (tinnitus) and eliminates both anxiety and dizziness.
Taking Ginkgo as an Anti-aging Home Remedy
Research conducted on Ginkgo involved highly concentrated extracts of the herb. To take ginkgo, you should, ideally, buy ginkgo in powdered form, as either capsules or tablets.
You can also buy standardized extracts, containing 24 percent flavone glycosides. Take between 60 and 240 milligrams of the extracts per day. Avoid an excess use of ginkgo, as this may cause irritability, restlessness, and diarrhea.
